Unemployment rules have been updated and adjusted in states impacted by the global coronavirus pandemic. This includes the states of Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio.

Ohio governor Mike DeWine has adjusted benefits during this time of emergency. Essentially, a one-week gap that was in place has been lifted in addition to other shifts. This gap was in place between the end of employment and the start of eligibility for unemployment benefits.

How Can I Get Benefits?

We are living in a time of crisis and changes and adjustments are being made every day. During this period rules will be shifted, but below are the rules typically connected to unemployment benefits.

Normally, if you are granted unemployment benefits there are rules in place in order for an individual to continue to collect them over a period of time. One of the stipulations is a person should be actively looking for work and if they find a job that is a suitable fit, and the job is offered, they should accept the position.

If you are wondering what actively looking means, it typically requires contacting at least two possible employers every week. The documentation of this is typically recorded with the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS). Of course, this is an aspect that has shifted during the emergency crisis as looking for a job is not part of social distancing.

The ODJFS is the administrative department of the Ohio state government. This department is responsible for public assistance, workforce development, unemployment compensation, and more.

Where to file for unemployment benefits in Ohio:

  • File online at unemployment.ohio.gov
  • File by phone at 877-644-6562.

Due to the coronavirus, both the website and office are experiencing very high volumes of communication. Filing online is likely the best path to securing benefits swiftly.

Is It Possible to Be Denied?

There are times when claims are denied. In those instances, individuals have 21 days to appeal. Then, the ODJFS will make a decision. The office could decide to reverse their decision if they will move the appeal to the Unemployment Compensation Review Commission (UCRC). There are possibilities beyond the UCRC, too. Filing with the Common Pleas Court is an option and there are times when these delays lead to the need for personal bankruptcy claims.

In this time of crisis, many workers need and deserve unemployment benefits. For this reason, states, including Ohio, have been removing hurdles to help unemployed workers. That said, there may still be instances where employers are fighting the claim. If you feel your rights have been trampled, talk to our  Columbus employment attorneys.
